What do you do?

The above question, is just silly. You, like me, probably wear several different hats depending whom you’re around, or what season of your life you’re in.

When asked “what do you do?” I used to always try to logic my way into creating a succinct answer for people.

Sometimes my answer needs to respect the context they met me in. Other times it needs to respect my ambition with how I might grow my character arch for the person asking because I want them to see me as different from the person I might appear as in the moment they asked. Whilst still others, I just smile cheekily and reply: “Whatever I want!”

Derek Delgaudio opened his off-Broadway run of “In & Of Itself” with the following quote:

”When you’re young you get asked: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” When you’re an adult, you get asked: “So what do you do?” Which is just another way of asking: “So what have you become?”

If I had to try and answer this as honestly as possible, I guess I’d say I’m an interdisciplinary artist, entrepreneur, and unreliable narrator. I’d continue by telling you that what I do, is not who I am, so if in asking this silly question, you’re attempting to get to know me, don’t ask what I do.

The best way to get to know me and finding out what I do, is by signing-up for my newsletter, browsing through my website and/or exploring my universe through my social media content.

Next time someone asks “what do you do?” I invite you to create your own box to invite them in, rather than trying to answer in a way that lets them put you in one.
